CHICAGO – Community leaders and residents joined the Chicago Housing Authority
to celebrated the official re-opening of an 18-month, $16 million renovation project at
Flannery Senior Apartments.
CHICAGO – Approximately 3,200 former Chicago Housing Authority residents who
have not yet satisfied their right of return under the Relocation Rights Contract (RRC) –
and who have not responded to CHA’s attempts to locate them – will be provided a
final opportunity to respond starting today, when 90-day legal notices appear in the
Chicago Sun-Times, El Dia and the Defender newspapers.
In an effort to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents, the Chicago Housing
Authority Board of Commissioners will consider a $23 million camera initiative
Wednesday that would see approximately 3,000 cameras installed at all of the
Authority’s senior and family developments, representing nearly 16,000 apartments.
Having won the support of CHA leaseholders, residents of the surrounding
community, and now the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development
(HUD), demolition will promptly begin at six buildings at Harold Ickes Homes – a
move that will enhance the safety and security of the community and pave the way for
future development.

The 23-year-old LeClaire Courts resident graduated from Central State University
with a dual degree in criminal justice and psychology in May 2008. Like most
graduates entering the workforce for the first time, Grundy struggled to find work.
But instead of getting discouraged, he took a temporary job at American Girl Place,
sought career counseling through CHA FamilyWorks agencies and was eventually
hired as a senior case manager at Heartland Human Care Services.

CHICAGO – Bringing Chicago’s West Side one step closer to much-needed
jobs, health care and housing, the Chicago Housing Authority and Sinai Health
System, along with the City of Chicago, have agreed to negotiate a land
transfer that will facilitate the development of housing, a free-standing
ambulatory care center and ultimately the replacement and expansion of the
existing Mt. Sinai Hospital in North Lawndale.
CHICAGO – The Chicago Housing Authority is on track with its goals for demolition
and replacement of housing, in fact, CHA exceeded its unit construction goal in 2008
with 1,593 units under construction during the year – 131 more units than the projected
goal of 1,462 units.
