The Chicago Tribune highlighted CHA’s successful efforts to help more veterans find homes in a front-page story that ran earlier this month.

CHA supports Chicagoans who are experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness with nearly 5,000 vouchers for specific high-risk populations, including veterans. These are known as VASH (Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing) Vouchers.

Since 2010, the number of CHA VASH vouchers has increased over 500 percent - from 210 in 2010 to 1308 in 2024. Over the same period, CHA’s VASH utilization rates have grown from less than 50 percent to more than 85 percent. In comparison, the national average for voucher usage is 75.9 percent, while the city and county of Los Angeles are in the 50 percent range.
