It is named in honor of Judge Frederick 'Duke' Slater, who was the first Black inductee to the College Football Hall of Fame. After retiring from football, Slater became a lawyer and in 1948 was elected as Chicago's second African-American judge, later advancing to the Superior Court in 1960.
