It was built in 1975 and is named in honor of Ella Flagg Young, the superintendent of Chicago Public Schools from 1909 through 1915 during which she sought numerous reforms. Young was the first female superintendent of a major city school system in the country and was elected as the first female president of the National Education Association in 1910.
