Altgeld Gardens Open Space Planning
Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) and our consultant, site design group, have started a community-centered planning and design process for the public spaces and street network in Altgeld Gardens.
Through this process, we will work closely with residents in the community to identify opportunities to enhance Carver Park and the other open spaces in Altgeld Gardens, including the roads, parkways, boulevards, and recreation facilities. We are doing this work now because there are several exciting investments coming to Altgeld Gardens soon such as:
- Chicago Transit Authority’s (CTA) Red Line Extension, which will bring four new stations to the Red Line including the final station at Altgeld Gardens.
- Forest Preserves of Cook County’s plan to improve the Beaubien Woods Boat Launch with a new trail connection and bathrooms.
- Chicago Department of Transportation’s plans to upgrade 130th Street with a multi-use side path and connect the Major Taylor Trail to the new Red Line station.
By updating plans for the open spaces and street network, CHA hopes to:
- Embrace all voices in the area to co-create a shared vision for Altgeld’s open spaces, including enhanced outdoor areas, and safer streets, bike paths and sidewalks.
- Identify opportunities to enhance the public spaces around the CTA Red Line station and other investments coming to Altgeld.
- Respond to current and future needs and wants for outdoor recreation and connectivity of Altgeld Gardens residents and the surrounding communities.

COMMUNITY OPEN HOUSE #1
June 5, 2024
On June 5th, about 70 community members, including almost 30 CHA residents, convened to discuss and provide input on improving the open spaces in Altgeld Gardens. The project team is set to summarize this valuable feedback and share it with both attendees and the broader public. The insights gathered will guide the creation of draft plans and designs, encompassing enhanced green spaces, improved transportation options and additional community investments. These draft plans will be presented at upcoming community meetings to gather further community feedback, which will be used to develop the final plan.
