Shavon Nowell is one of the first residents to occupy an apartment that was renovated under Restore Home. She had previously lived with her grandmother, who provided the financial support for housing. But when her grandmother died in November, Nowell and her three children were suddenly desperate for housing.

In April 2024, CHA and its development partners marked the grand openings of two major affordable housing developments.

CHA’s Workforce Opportunity Resource Center (WORC) celebrated six CHA residents who graduated from the UIC Mile Square Health Center as certified Dental Assistants.

CHA’s Board of Commissioners approved funding for Phase IC of the Lathrop redevelopment at March’s Board Meeting. This long-awaited third phase will focus on the Lathrop South campus (south of Diversey Avenue) and will address all remaining vacant buildings on the Lathrop site. 

CHA applauds the Federal FY2024 Spending Bill that was signed by President Biden earlier this month. The bill includes $850,000 for each of two CHA projects located on the South Side: Legends South Phase A3 in Bronzeville, and LeClaire, near Midway Airport.

For the first time in nearly 25 years, CHA is undertaking a major renovation project at Brooks Homes, part of the ABLA campus on the near west side. The renovation includes interior updates and upgrades in all 330 apartments, new roofs, new doors and windows, and new landscaping, sidewalks and streets.

Seven CHA residents recently became Certified Community Health Workers (CHW) after completing a rigorous training program that included 100 hours of instruction and an 80-hour practicum.

Construction is wrapping up on the first residential phase of Ogden Commons, located on the site of the former Lawndale Complex in the North Lawndale community. The four-story building includes 92 apartments - 37 CHA-subsidized, 46 affordable and nine market-rate. Work is expected to be completed this spring.

Over the past twelve months, CHA has been making major improvements to laundry facilities across its senior portfolio. New commercial grade washers and dryers were added, as was new flooring, lighting and paint.
